Recruiting for soft skills is essential and this blog explores why it is essential and how organizations can identify these qualities during the hiring process. Growing Need for Soft Skills in Recruitment
Interpersonal
or people skills are referred to as soft skills and those who have these skills
can help individuals to effectively interact with others and adapt to the
changing environments. Soft skills have become indispensable in the globalized
world. Remote work and cross-functional teams are also common in those
interconnected workplaces. LinkedIn’s Global Talent Trend Report shows that 92%
of hiring managers agreed that soft skills are much more important than hard
skills. But, most organizations are struggling to find candidates with both
skills (LinkedIn, 2019).
Though
technical skills can be easily measured, soft skills cannot be measured. Those
soft skills involve subjective and dynamic features and may impact long-term
job performance and team synergy. If an employee is proficient technically, he
may not have or lack effective communication skills, and it may result in
misalignment and lower productivity within a team.

Soft Skills in the Hiring Process
- Behavioral Interviews – In these interviews questions like how they have handled situations in the past by demonstrating soft skills are asked of the candidates. The way of answering may help interviewers to gather the abilities of the candidate in teamwork and communication.
- Situational Judgment Tests (SJTs): Here some hypothetical, job-related situational questions are asked of the candidates and collect their best course of action. Problem-solving skills, emotional intelligence, and other interpersonal abilities can be evaluated effectively by these types of questions (Weekley & Ployhart, 2013).
- Competency-Based Assessment Models - These allow organizations to set clear criteria for each role and incorporate specific soft skills along with technical skills. A competency model for a project manager may include adaptability and team leadership as key competencies (Boyatzis, 1982).
- Role-Playing or Group Exercises - Conducting group exercises or role-playing scenarios during the interview process helps hiring managers observe and identify how candidates interact, communicate, and resolve conflicts in real time. This method helps assess teamwork and communication skills.

Strong interpersonal skills can help employees create a more positive and

strong communication abilities and high emotional intelligence are more likely
to act like leaders. By concentrating on these soft talents, organizations may
develop future leaders. These construct leaders may possess technical expertise
as well as the ability to motivate and guide others.

for its stringent hiring procedures. Additionally, Google assesses both soft
and technical talents. They place a lot of emphasis on "Googliness,"
emphasizing traits like humility, cooperation, and flexibility. Thus, the

& Bowen, 2010).
In conclusion, hiring
for soft skills has become essential to the success of organizations as
workplaces grow increasingly complicated and diverse across the globe.
Businesses can choose applicants who are not only competent but also fit with
company culture and values by incorporating tests for communication, teamwork,
and flexibility. Focusing on soft skills eventually results in a workforce that

We also use situational judgment tests, which present candidates with hypothetical workplace scenarios to assess how they would react in certain situations, helping us gauge their emotional intelligence, adaptability, and decision-making.
